Boys2Men. Kenya dig it?

Boys2Men, the first development camp for boys, will take place from August 11-16, 2007. Read on to find out how you can get involved and help.

This year, Thika area US Peace Corps volunteers are introducing a new and innovative education program in alliance with YARD (Youth Action for Rural Development). YARD is a community-based organization in Gatanga division of Thika district. It was founded in 2002 with the goal of community development, especially through engagement of the youth. YARD currently oversees several different projects, including a sponsorship program for OVC’s, a Food Security & Nutrition program, a Small Farmers Marketing Assistance Program, and a community library.
The program we are introducing, Boys2Men, is a 6 day camp, being held in August, for 20 smart, enthusiastic boys. This unique program has been designed to empower young men through fun, interactive sessions with an emphasis on life skills, equality, and health issues. Educating and encouraging Kenya’s youth is one of the best ways to ensure progress and growth for the country. While there are many existing programs that focus on empowering females, it seems that boys are often overlooked. Boys2Men looks to provide young men with the opportunity to learn valuable lessons that will help them realize their potential, and brighten their future.
In order to make this camp a reality we need your help. We are looking for caring, forward thinking local businesses and individuals to lend financial support. Great effort has gone into the planning of Boys2Men to make it cost effective and therefore sustainable for the years to come. The attached budget illustrates how donations will be spent, and includes the per camper cost (3,370 /=, or about $51). The boys that attend the camp are invited to participate at no cost to them. It would be greatly appreciated if you could commit to sponsoring one or more boys. If this is beyond your means, any donation, monetary or material would also be appreciated. Donations for Boys2Men, in the form of cash or check, can be given to YARD via any of the Peace Corps volunteers listed below, or sent directly to their address. I

With Sincere Thanks,

    Jonny,
It is fun to read your blog and learn what is gonig on in your life. I am thinking about trying to come out there over Christmas (Flying into Nairobi) as my sister will be there starting in August for 2 years. Will you still be around? I am still trying to work out the details because, as we have 2 kids now, I am still trying to weight if I will use over half of my year's vacation on a trip without my family. Shoot me a quick email at owen.hill@rolholdings.com if it would be possible to come spend some time with you. I pray that you are well.
